Best of the Academy Awards 2020

Lots of good stuff this year. Plenty of color, plenty of sparkle, plenty of interesting and unexpected choices. Round ’em up!

Sigourney Weaver in Dior

Wow, this is her color. I love how the silhouette drapes over her body and how the shape and color of her hair balances out everything. If Sigourney’s hair had been a shade darker, it wouldn’t have worked quite as perfectly. She looks incredible. And I love how this is kind of what I feel Scarlet O’Hara probably envisioned for her gown made out of those dusty curtains, but actualized.

Regina King in custom Versace

I have loved seeing more and more of this silhouette with a full skirt that opens up to reveal either a column dress or pants (see Daisy Ridley’s London premiere look for The Rise of Skywalker). It’s fun and very old Hollywood glamorous, with beading details that give a deco feeling. Love the shade of pink on Regina, too. I’m not sure about how her hair is styled but I can’t find a picture of it from every angle, so it’s hard to judge.

Emilia Clarke in Versace

I swore we already saw Emilia in this exact same look – no really, I thought this was a mistake and this was her from a couple years ago – but nope, this is her today. And I like it! Her skin is so cool that she can do this icy lilac shade very well. And I just love glittery things.

Janelle Monae in Ralph Lauren

I mean, you kinda can’t not like this. It’s meant to be a fantasy. Also, it looks comfortable! And it belongs in a space movie, or some modernized version of Metropolis. And I’m hearing rumors of 600 hours of hand embroidery?!

Cynthia Erivo in Atelier Versace

Okay so Versace is apparently dominating tonight. I feel like I always end up picking Armani stuff as my faves, but not this time around. I loooooooove this. Her hair, her manicure and jewelry details, it all works perfectly.

Sandra Oh in Elie Saab

Too much in all the right ways. Again, a fantasy. Again, sparkles. And literal clouds of tulle.

Natalie Portman in Dior

You’re going to have to peep a closer look at the embroidery on her cape. I’ll just say that much. Beyond that, I LOVE her bob and I love the embroidery detail on the gown.

The Best of the Golden Globes 2020

Took a writing vacation! But now it’s a new decade! New awards season! New red carpet! LET’S GOOOOO!

But first, a quick sidenote- I feel like people kind of lost their minds this round. J Lo. Kerry. Rooney. Michelle. GWYNETH. And literally the FIRST time I’ve ever hated what Charlize has worn. There was a whole lotta NO going on and it hurt. Maybe it’s all the very legal weed going around but my take is that folks were feeling a little too … creative? Free? So in comparison, my picks are going to feel awfully safe FYI.

Ana de Armas in Schiaparelli (or is it Ralph and Russo?! Have literally seen both designers named multiple times!)

Love a sparkle. Love a full gown. Love some navy. Did you know Classic Navy is Pantone’s color of 2020? I’m a fan. Ana’s like the new Penelope Cruz to me. Absolutely cannot WAIT to see her on the press circuit for James Bond next year, and loved her in KNIVES OUT.

Margot Robbie in Chanel

It HaS pOcKeTs!!!! I mean, you know that’s kinda why I love it. But the sequin detailing on the top of this Chanel creation is also super, super gorgeous. I also love the simple silhouette. Margot is always understated with a bit of an edgy sparkle, and I like that I can count on that.

Zoey Deutch in Fendi

If you were bored, now you’re not. This is maybe my favorite color to see on a red carpet-  tropical, canary yellow. I dig the seventies style and the easy feel to this gown, too. It has a lounge vibe, like an extra fancy hostess giving a really groovy party. I would perhaps change her hair styling, but overall I absolutely loved this.

Jodie Comer in Mary Katrantzou

Is the silhouette my favorite? Maybe not. But the color and the texture … come on. You know this emerald shade is more fun than anything else you’re seeing out there. And again, details: pairing it with that yellow feathered clutch was genius, and on other pictures you may notice her hot pink sandals. And I do love that statement sleeves are having a moment.

Scarlett Johansson in Dior

This has really been a heck of a year for Scarlett. Her look at the premiere of AVENGERS: ENDGAME was maybe the best she’s ever looked. I was stunned. But this is another angle for her; it feels so classic movie star. We’ve been watching her for so long in all these comic movies that we’ve sort of forgotten that she’s a truly great actress beyond her catsuit, and she has been for a really long time. This dress speaks to that.
